I really would recommend the The WSET tasting pack to those starting a level 2. I found it enhanced my tasting technique as it was helpful to have John walk you through each element. It was especially helpful for recognising the difference between my own personal tastes and wine quality – it’s harder than you think separating the two! There is also the added benefit of it being a fun activity to try from the comfort of your own home.
I recently tried a WSET SAT calibration wine tasting pack from John at Northern Wine school. There were 4 white wines and 2 red wines. They were chosen to illustrate the different aromas and flavours and it was great to taste them back to back to note the differences. The tasting was backed up with a very informative video which featured the same wines. As recommended I tasted the wines first with my chart (level 2) and then read the tasting notes before watching the video. It was reassuring to agree with John’s comments but I still have a bit to go before I am truly assessing the wines. I will definitely do it again.
I thought it was an excellent idea to be able to try this at home. I did enjoy the video which I found very helpful.
There’s an art to tasting wine, a science some say. It’s true that the more you know about wine the more you can enjoy it, and understanding how to really taste wine is a great way in.
The Wine and Spirits Education Trust (WSET) have developed a renowned means of tasting wine designed to give you a framework to analyse the wine’s characteristics – this wine experience is both interesting and useful. This virtual course is the WSET Level Two and Three Systematic Approach to Tasting (SAT) – perfect if you’re studying either of those courses or, indeed, if you just want to hone your wine skills and knowledge.
This is a horizontal tasting of wines that are different aroma and flavour profiles, winemaking techniques, age and quality levels. This Systematic Approach to Tasting calibrates your palate to assess and recognise much of what makes wine: colour, aroma, acidity, sweetness, tannin, intensity, finish, quality… Primary, secondary and tertiary characteristics will become second-nature to you.
You will receive six different wines, each one presented in a 50ml bottle – four whites and two red specifically chosen for their range, variety and quality: it’s fantastic to have so many great wines to taste.
A lovely collection of whites including an excellent Tokaji:
● Pinot Grigio Delle Venezie DOC, 11.5% abv
● Gewurztraminer, Alsace AOC, 13.5% abv
● Napa Valley Chardonnay, 14.5%abv
● Tokaji 5 Puttonyos 2013, 11%abv
A fantastic pair of reds including an amazing Barolo:
